Pat's thought: Three problems to solve:

2. Federal requirement (NCLB)
3. What is tech literacy evolving to in the 21st century?

Denise shared a chart she created called “What Does 8th Grade Literacy Requirements Look Like?
  • Discussion about activities on charts
    • Science Lesson
    • Student Success Plan (requires student email)
  • The chart is a starting point but should not be viewed as a checklist
  • Include the chart as a resource. Gives direction and awareness

Can we address every audience we listed with the same document?
  • Drop legislators and DCET Board
  • The same paper could address District and Building Administrators; Therefore, address Curriculum Directors.
  • In turn, that "might" translate down to teachers
What is the purpose of this document?
  • PAT: Inform audience about the driving forces behind the 8th grade tech literacy initiative.
  • Approach this as something that promotes student achievement, note that the NCLB requirement is research-based (see CARET)
  • WENDY: Inform audience about best-practice in achieving 8th grade tech literacy.
  • ALYSSA: Inform audience about the driving forces behind and INTEGRATE's beliefs about the 8th grade tech literacy initiative.
    • 21st century skills
    • New NETS Standards
    • How these 2 driving forces combine with educator's mission to increase student achievement (we need to show them how these 2 driving forces will help them keep their eye on the ball instead of being viewed as one more thing that will distract them from meeting the main goal of increasing student achievement)

Possible outline
  • Intro - 8th grade tech literacy/NCLB/INTEGRATE (See introduction page)
  • Del Recommended Curriculum is currently utilizing these 21st Cent Skills as embodied in things like International Education, Differentiation
  • Explain 21st Century Skills from the State Leaders Action Guide -- 21st Cent Skills (of which tech skills are a component)
  • Addressed in Visiion 2015. ???
  • Facts to support this (CARET research)
  • Therefore it is the belief of INTEGRATE that:
    • Work continues to support best-practice tech initiatives to meet NCLB reqmts
    • include beliefs from original belief page
    • All Teachers should plan their lessons, but an understanding of the 21st Cent skills should help them understand why including the tech pieces is essential and why those pieces are not simply about the tech skills but about the way to scaffold higher order thinking --- this is where our work begins!
    • Promote District collaboration and sharing - The mechanism for doing this is to collaborate with others in the school, district, state and world -- which btw is an embodiment of a 21st century skill
